How to choose a single-use flexible ureteroscope

Most single-use flexible ureteroscopes on the UK market cluster tightly: 7.5 to 9.5 Fr shafts, a 3.5 or 3.6 Fr working channel, 270° to 285° deflection. What separates them is everything around the scope.

1. What does it tie you to?

Almost every single-use scope runs on its manufacturer's own console. That is a capital purchase, a theatre footprint, a service contract and a switching cost. A scope that runs on a tower you already own is cheaper than its unit price suggests.

2. Working channel, and what has to fit through it

The channel caps what you can do. Check the accessory statement rather than the channel figure alone.

3. Deflection, and whether it locks

The range between 270° and 285° is modest. Locking deflection and symmetry matter more, particularly on cystoscopes.

4. Shaft diameter — usually fourth, not first

Diameter is a trade, not a virtue: the slimmest scopes buy their slimness with a narrower channel.

5. Supply, and what happens when it fails

Lead times, minimum order quantities, shelf life and storage are part of the specification even though none appear on a datasheet.
